In 1992, dental hygiene decks were developed and created by James R. Lozier, DDS. Dental hygiene decks are flashcards considered to be one of the easiest and effective study tool methods available to dental hygiene students. The flashcards are based on previous exams and provides background information, not simply the answer, to improve comprehension.
It is not necessary to tote a cumbersome laptop or textbooks and notepads with these flash cards. These dental hygiene decks are a convenient way to study and review exam related material while waiting in a long line, during your commute, or during lunch breaks.
The dental hygiene decks are designed to prepare dental hygiene students for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) with easy to read questions on the front and supplemental information related to the question on the back of the card. Some describe this method as teaching the test, because the dental hygiene decks are thorough and comprehensive in nature. Sections are color coded according to each topic.
The dental hygiene decks have an abbreviation in the upper right corner that corresponds to the topic that is discussed on each card. The legend card, located at the front of each section defines the abbreviations. This indexing system provides students with an easy reference to certain cards or topics as needed. The NBDHE is a written examination which assesses a student's ability to understand important information related to basic biomedical, dental and dental hygiene sciences.
There are approximately 350 multiple choice questions on the exam. The dental hygiene decks offers flashcards which cover each area studied in school and what can be expected on the exam. These include basic sciences (anatomic sciences, microbiology and pathology, biochemistry and physiology), oral pathology, pharmacology, dental anatomy & occlusion, nutrition, periodontics, radiology, community diversity, dental materials and instrumentation.
Dental hygiene decks consistently strive to provide students with study aids that are accurate and complete. Errors are always corrected and students are notified of changes, whether the change is a correction or clarification. Students can purchase used dental hygiene decks if the current editions are not affordable.
Of course, you will not have the most up-to-date information to study from, unless someone your exam is scheduled in between new editions. Another possibility is to use ones at a library. The drawback is students are not allowed to checkout the flashcards and will have to designate hours of study time at the library.
